Can’t get enough March 28, 2010

It is rare (has actually never happened) that I blog twice in one day, and it would be even rarer that those two posts concern the same subject. So this is truly a special day, but then again, the Twins are truly something special.

I was reading this short story from The Star Tribune and I was happy to see that the Twins are going to create a committee of closers to fill Joe Nathan’s very large shoes, left vacant after tearing a ligament that required Tommy John surgery on Friday. For this team and the relievers on the roster, I think a committee approach makes the most sense, unless of course we decide to trade for a closer.

But that’s not what really got me excited (beyond the level already expressed in my previous post). The thing that really got my blood pumping was the Twins lineup provided at the end of the story. The lineup appears thusly:

1. Denard Span, CF
2. Orlando Hudson, 2B
3. Joe Mauer, C
4. Justin Morneau, 1B
5. Michael Cuddyer, RF
6. Jim Thome, DH
7. Jason Kubel, LF
8. J.J. Hardy, SS
9. Brendan Harris, 3B

The only word that can describe such a collection of ballplayers is this: Dirty. Filthy dirty to be exact. With one of the truest lead-off men in the game, followed by a second-baseman that hits for average, and then the most powerful 5-man middle of a lineup anywhere, not to mention decent batsmen rounding out the order, opposing pitchers are sure to be worried.

This could be a very dangerous lineup. It has a lot of power, a lot of hitters that hit for average, and a lot of potential.

It just has a lot of everything, and that’s perfect, because I just can’t get enough Twins baseball.
