Today is a great day. No, it’s not the first day of spring. Well, it is, but that’s not why it’s great. The reason that today should be a national holiday is this: Joe Mauer re-signed with the Twins!

The Minnesota kid will stay a Twin through the 2018 season after signing a 8-year extension worth a reported $184 million. It has been weeks since the first report was leaked that he had re-signed, but now it’s official, and it’s glorious. Yes it seems a bit risky to sign a catcher with past knee troubles to a long-term contract, but on the other hand, it’s Joe Mauer!

Yes, Joe Mauer. Or as the official team site says, “Mauer, 26, was named the 2009 American League MVP after batting .365 with 28 home runs and 96 RBIs. He is a three-time All-Star and a two-time Gold Glove winner in six seasons with the Twins. The catcher is also one of only 10 players in Major League history to win three or more batting titles.”

He’s Joe Mauer, and really, there’s nothing more to say.

You can check out the full story at the official team site.
